Meeting the Moment: Planning, Identity, and Empowerment

Portraits of LisaBeth Barajas, Noel Nix, Andrew Tran and Denetrick Powers

Through red-lining, freeway development, and other harmful practices, planners of the past created the conditions for the racial disparities we see in modern metropolitan areas. Awareness of these disparities has been heightened in the past year as the COVID-19 pandemic and civil uprisings calling for racial justice have reshaped our communities. Are planners today correcting the mistakes of their predecessors? What tools and practices are planning professionals leveraging to reverse racial inequities and build just and inclusive cities?
