We caught up with Jamie Stallman as he completed his Master of Science in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy degree in spring 2021.
Tell us about your background.
I grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, and went to school at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where I double majored in religion and biology. I took my passion for environmental justice to Union Theological Seminary to learn from and with those asking the types of questions our society needs to be asking. I took a few years to try to apply some of those lessons before coming back to Minnesota.
What are your plans after graduation?
I'll be working at Great River Energy in the Member Services Department as a market analyst.
What are your longer-term goals?
My five-year plan is to remodel some of my house and see where the position at Great River Energy leads. After that, I'd love to teach at the collegiate level, but we'll see how that all shakes out.
Why did you choose to attend the Humphrey School?
I really took my time in making the decision for this master’s degree. I was looking at master’s and PhD programs in Sweden, Iceland, Germany, and on both coasts. I ultimately decided the Humphrey School was the best option given the research interest and opportunities, the quality of the faculty, the tightly knit cohort, the network that the Humphrey School offers, and where our alumni work after school. It's quite the program!
What are the most important takeaways from your time at the Humphrey School?
I thoroughly enjoyed working with the faculty. Their passion and care for the students and their research really affirmed that this was the right program for me. I feel very equipped to be doing the work at Great River Energy. I also enjoyed serving as the co-president of the Energy and Environmental Policy Club. We got to do some very cool things this year, even with everything being virtual.
