Electric utilities use complex optimization models to choose the type and timing of new power plant investments. However, those models make simplifying assumptions about renewables that may bias their outputs. Dr. Stephen Rose discusses how and why modelers make these simplifications and how to study study model-based decision-making in a systematic way.
