After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Alan joined the Army and was commissioned as an officer. For several years, his priorities were national service (as an officer in Iraq and later as a civilian in Afghanistan).  After returning from active duty service he continued his education at the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

At the Humphrey School, Alan was awarded the prestigious Mary A. McEvoy Public Engagement and Leadership Award.

Prior to being elected as Secretary/Treasurer of the White Earth Nation, he served as a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist at the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Before that he worked in a civil rights unit with the State of Minnesota. Since his election, he helped pass the Veteran, Servicemember, and Veteran Family Care Resolution which provides significant benefits for veterans and their families within the Tribe.

In 2020, Alan was a candidate for Minnesota State Senate District 2.
