Bring your bike and help advance University of Minnesota research on the future of Minnesota bikeways.

University of Minnesota researchers are looking for volunteer cyclists to participate in a Bike for Science event on September 23. The event is part of a Minnesota Department of Transportation research project examining the operational characteristics of conventional and electric-assisted bicycles and their riders.

Participants will bring their conventional bike or e-bike and ride approximately 2.5 miles on a predetermined route beginning and ending at the Civil Engineering Building. Researchers will attach data loggers to each bike to collect measurements such as velocity, acceleration, and turning radius.

The data will help researchers better understand how conventional bikes and e-bikes operate and inform MnDOT’s consideration of bicycle facility design and safety.

Each volunteer will receive a Bike for Science water bottle or bike helmet.

The research project is led by Raphael Stern, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering, and Greg Lindsey, professor emeritus at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
