Our Greatest Songs Are Still Unsung

For 50 years, the Humphrey School of Public Affairs has prepared leaders, advanced ideas, and brought people together around a shared public purpose: putting policy, planning, and leadership in service of human dignity and the common good.

This anniversary is both a milestone and a bridge. It is a chance to celebrate the people, ideas, and work that have shaped the Humphrey School and to ask what the next 50 years of public leadership will demand of us.

The challenges ahead are complex. Meeting them will require curiosity, persistence, constructive dialogue, and a willingness to stay engaged across differences. Above all, it will require us to work together, grounded in the belief that public leadership can build a better tomorrow.

A Living Memorial

When the School was named for Hubert H. Humphrey in 1977, he envisioned something more than a monument. He wanted a living memorial: a place that would prepare future leaders, encourage vigorous debate, and put knowledge to work in service of the public good.

Fifty years later, that vision lives on in our students and alumni, our research and teaching, and our engagement with communities in Minnesota and around the world.

Stories of Public Leadership

For 50 years, the Humphrey School has been shaped by people who put ideas into action in government and nonprofits, communities and classrooms, research and public service.

Throughout our anniversary year, we'll share stories from across the School's history: the people who built it, the ideas that changed it, and the students, alumni, faculty, staff, and partners carrying its work forward today.

More stories from 50 years of public leadership will be added throughout the anniversary year.

Dean Botchwey: We Will Focus on 'Understanding, Empathy, Respect for Differing Perspectives'

As political polarization deepens nationwide, the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs is taking bold steps to equip students with the skills to lead across differences. Through its new Constructive Dialogue initiative—developed in partnership with the Volcker Alliance and Constructive Dialogue Institute—the School is embedding training in respectful communication, collaboration, and active listening into its curriculum, beginning with incoming graduate students and expanding to the broader campus and community.

Humphrey School Awards its First Doctoral Degrees in Public Affairs

The first students to receive doctoral degrees from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs celebrated their achievements at the school’s commencement this month.

Andrew Guthrie and Gregg Colburn received their PhDs at the May 13 commencement in a traditional hooding ceremony, where their faculty advisors placed doctoral hoods over their heads. The tradition is symbolic of passing the guard from one generation of doctors to the next.

"For 50 years, the Humphrey School has been a place where people show up, stay engaged, and do the work of public leadership together. That work looks different in every generation, but the commitment remains the same: to one another, to our communities, and to the common good. As we mark this milestone, we carry forward not only what this School has accomplished, but how it has accomplished it, through connection, dialogue, and a shared belief that we are stronger together."

Humphrey's Vision, Today's Challenges

For five decades, the Humphrey School has brought research, teaching, and public engagement to the challenges shaping people's lives.

Today, that work converges around our Constellations of M(pact): interconnected areas where Humphrey School expertise can make a meaningful difference.

Constellations of M(pact)

The Humphrey School's research, teaching, and engagement converge around interconnected areas of impact we call Constellations of M(pact). Each constellation reflects the school's commitment to producing work that matters, in the tradition Humphrey envisioned: rigorous, nonpartisan, and in service of the public good.
