Bachelor of Arts/Master of Public Policy in Political Engagement

The University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs and College of Liberal Arts’ Political Science department BA/MPP on Political Engagement program provides the unique opportunity to students studying at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus to expedite an academic and professional program in political engagement.

Students pursuing a major in political science in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) will receive the credentials, practical skill set, and sophisticated knowledge that employers in political engagement seek today. Students in the program will fulfill all CLA undergraduate requirements and be equipped with the financial, management, and policy analysis skills that the Humphrey School offers, graduating with a BA and MPP.

Program Overview

The BA/MPP Early Admission Program begins when an undergraduate Political Science student is partway through his or her undergraduate coursework. Students with career goals focused on political engagement should apply during their junior year after consulting with Political Science faculty advisor Professor Paul Soper. Students admitted into the program enroll in graduate-level courses during their senior year. Having completed all requirements for a BA in Political Science by the end of their senior year, students will begin a fifth year, devoted to full-time graduate study with the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the BA/MPP on Political Engagement program will earn a minimum of 45 graduate-level credits as well as knowledge about finances, budgets, and management in the nonprofit and public sectors. Students will also participate in two professional development experiences: first, during their undergraduate program, when they will complete an internship; and second, during their graduate summer session, when they will complete a public service mentorship with a professional in their chosen field of specialization. Additionally, students will complete at least 3 PhD level courses in Political Science, making their level of academic sophistication unique among master’s level students.

Master of Public Policy (MPP)

Students select a Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree because they are committed to public service and working on community or public issues and problems. The mission of the MPP program is to prepare professionals with specialized skills and knowledge to advance the common good in a range of public policy issues in a diverse world. An MPP degree is excellent training for a career in the public, private, or nonprofit sector. Learn more.
