What tools and practices are planning professionals leveraging to reverse racial inequities and build just and inclusive cities? A panel of MURP alumni discuss urgent issues facing planners today.

Through red-lining, freeway development, and other harmful practices, planners of the past created the conditions for the racial disparities we see in modern metropolitan areas. Awareness of these disparities has been heightened in the past year as the COVID-19 pandemic and civil uprisings calling for racial justice have reshaped our communities. Are planners today correcting the mistakes of their predecessors? What tools and practices are planning professionals leveraging to reverse racial inequities and build just and inclusive cities?

Denetrick Powers, MURP ’18, will moderate the discussion. Panelists will include:

LisaBeth Barajas, MURP ’04
Community Development Director
Metropolitan Council

Noel Nix, MURP ’10
Director of Community
Initiatives
City of St. Paul

Andrew Tran, MURP ’15
Associate Community Planner
City of Seattle
