Vision Zero and the Safe Systems approach call for a paradigm shift in transportation safety which requires transportation professionals to understand their roles as public health professionals and incorporate public health principles into thinking and practice.

In 2022, the US Department of Transportation adopted the Safe Systems Approach as the national strategy for roadway safety. In his talk Safe Systems: Applying the Public Health Approach in Transportation, Dave Ederer will discuss how public health methods and theory are being applied to build a safer transportation system.
