The Sixth World Conference on Remedies to Racial and Social Inequality will convene academic, policy, and community leaders from South Africa, North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe to share their insights and experience battling inequality. We will formulate practical and innovative solutions to eliminating racial and social inequality.

Issues to be tackled:

  • Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on economic, educational, medical and social disparities facing racial/ethnic minorities and people of color
  • Structural poverty and access to health care, education, and employment
  • Gender inequality
  • Energy, the environment, and climate change 
  • Food and water insecurity
  • Social isolation and digital oppression
  • Democracy and racism

About the Organizers

The Sixth World Conference will be jointly hosted by the Roy Wilkins Center (Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota), and the Faculty of Economics & Management Sciences, University of the Western Cape.

Roy Wilkins Center for Human Relations and Social Justice

Building on the legacy of American civil rights leader Roy Wilkins, the Wilkins Center is dedicated to finding solutions to racial and ethnic inequality through an integrated model of research, dialogue, and community partnerships. Through its integrated model, the center guides and empowers policymakers, nonprofit leaders, and community leaders to develop and promote solutions to the problems of racism and racial and ethnic inequality locally, nationally, and globally.

Economics & Management Sciences Faculty

Economics & Management Sciences (EMS)  is the largest Faculty at the University of the Western Cape which is well-known for its role in the struggle against apartheid and its continued fight against oppression, discrimination and disadvantage in modern day South Africa. EMS continues to play its part by leveraging the academic project to bear influence on the social, economic, political and technological development of society through teaching, learning and critical scholarship. In this regard it focuses its effort on several niches including Citizenship and Democracy, Land, and Entrepreneurship.
