Professor Morris Kleiner Honored for Lifetime Research in Human Resources and Employment Policy
February 25, 2016—Humphrey School of Public Affairs Professor Morris Kleiner will be honored this spring by the national Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA) for his lifetime of research on human resources and the employment relationship. Kleiner, whose research on occupational licensing has been cited within legislation proposed by the Obama Administration and in hearings by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, is the first University of Minnesota faculty member to receive this honor.
Humphrey School Dean Eric Schwartz says, “Professor Kleiner has shown exceptional commitment and dedication in this field for nearly three decades. His contributions have been recognized by local, state, and national policy makers and have helped to improve the lives of countless American workers. We are honored to have him at the Humphrey School.”
Kleiner, who has been at the University of Minnesota for 28 years and holds the AFL-CIO Chair in Labor Policy, has spent his career studying the role of institutions in the labor market and factors and incentives that influence productivity. He is best known for his work on the influence of occupational licensing on the economy. His latest book entitled, Guild-Ridden Labor Markets: The Curious Case of Occupational Licensing was published for Upjohn Press in 2015. As one of this year’s four inductees into the group’s Association of Academic Fellows, Kleiner joins leading scholars in LERA’s "Hall of Fame" from Princeton, MIT, Harvard, Cornell, and Stanford. The award will be presented at LERA’s annual conference in Minneapolis on May 28th, 2016. Kleiner has also been recognized by the University of Minnesota and the Humphrey School, having received the Humphrey Medal for outstanding teaching on public affairs, business, and economics.
