Humphrey School Alumni Meet Challenge to Raise $25,000 for Student Scholarships
July 16, 2014—MINNEAPOLIS, MN (7/16/14)—Humphrey School of Public Affairs alumni rose to the challenge and met an ambitious fundraising goal. Humphrey School advisory council member Roger Parkinson offered to match dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000 any gifts from new alumni donors or alumni who increased the amount of their annual gift to the School.
Two hundred twenty graduates stepped forward to help the School meet the match. One hundred sixty-five individuals gave for the first time and 55 alumni increased their gift from the previous year resulting in more than $50,000 toward scholarship support. The Humphrey School wishes to extend a special thank you to Mr. Parkinson for his continued support and service to the Humphrey School and its students, and to all alumni who contributed.
Parkinson is a recipient of a 2014 University of Minnesota Award of Distinction, which recognizes those who have attained distinction in their field, profession, and/or public or volunteer service and are not an alumnus of the University. He has spent his career in the newspaper business, including as publisher and CEO, and then chairman, of the Toronto Globe and Mail, and also publisher and president of the Buffalo Courier-Express and then the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
I was fortunate to receive a scholarship that made my education possible and my financial future easier. While I am still in the early stages of my career, I still believe it is important to give what I can, when I can. If all 4,000 Humphrey alumni gave a little, that would add up to a lot! I know how much that means to current and future students.

I really wanted to give back to the school that has given me so much in the way of my experiences and career. I decided that now was the time to make my first gift ever to the Humphrey School so I could help another student have the same great experiences that I was fortunate enough to have had while at the Humphrey.

As a student, I benefited from the legacy and support of those that went before me, the Humphrey alumni. Now, it is my turn to support the Humphrey students of today and tomorrow. With the generous match, I was able to increase the impact of my support.

Knowing the important role the Humphrey School has played in my career, I wanted to give back by increasing my annual gift, which helped us achieve a matching grant. By giving, I hope to pass on the same valuable Humphrey School education and experience to future students.
