Spring is a busy time at the Humphrey School as we prepare for the end of this academic year and make final decisions about student admissions and financial aid offers for the next academic year. It is both exhausting and exhilarating, as simultaneously preparing students to enter into and graduate from our programs is a powerful reminder of the consequential work we do and the impact we have on hundreds of emerging public leaders every year.

This spring is made even more exciting at the Humphrey School because we just launched our $20 million Leading Together campaign to deepen and expand the teaching, research, and engagement mission of the School. I am confident that this ambitious fundraising effort will be successful primarily because it is the shared vision of so many deeply committed partners—from our faculty and alumni to public policy and planning leaders around the world—who helped us set the Leading Together priorities. Specifically, this effort will allow us to:

  • Broaden access to attract diverse and talented future public affairs leaders
  • Promote hope, opportunity, democracy, and civic life through extraordinary research and teaching
  • Expand our global reach and impact through programs that bring the world to Minnesota and Minnesota to the world.

I believe the Humphrey School can do this work better than any other policy-oriented school. We are a comprehensive public affairs school at the top of the national rankings that is enriched by Midwestern values, yet not constrained by our geography. Guided by a powerful and timely mission, we understand well our responsibility to promote a vision of leadership that brings diverse people and communities together to create the kind of peaceful and prosperous world we all desire.

Our Leading Together campaign will allow us to admit the most highly qualified students regardless of their background or economic status, and to recruit and retain the most talented faculty from around the world. It will strengthen our signature capacity for uniting people, knowledge, and ideas to advance the common good in a diverse and rapidly changing world. And it will enable our students, alumni, and faculty to deepen their work, whether it’s tackling climate change, planning smart cities, ensuring economic opportunity for all families, or advocating for human rights.

You will see our Leading Together imperative reflected throughout this issue of Humphrey magazine. I am so proud of the real-world scholarship of our talented faculty and staff highlighted on the following pages. I am also inspired by the dedication of our students, who graduate with a doctorate or master’s degree and go on to share their policy expertise with the world. We are all fortunate that they will do it Humphrey style.
