Bloomberg's Mission as Humphrey School Dean: Lead by Bringing People Together

Emphasizing the theme of “Leading Together,” Laura Bloomberg officially kicked off her tenure as the new dean of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at a welcome reception Wednesday evening.

“It is an honor to lead this School,” Bloomberg told community members, faculty, staff, and well-wishers who attended the event to celebrate her new role, noting that they all have a role to play in advancing the Humphrey School’s mission in three main areas.

  • Broadening access for a wider array of future public affairs leaders
  • Promoting hope, opportunity, democracy, and civic life through extraordinary research and teaching
  • Expanding the School’s global reach and impact through programs that bring the world to Minnesota and Minnesota to the world

“What brings us together at the Humphrey School are these core themes that infuse everything we do,” Bloomberg said. “Our work brings hundreds of students and thousands of community partners into this School every year. Our work daily sends our faculty, staff, and students into this community and those across the globe in a constant effort to better understand, deepen, and implement excellent and effective public policies, urban planning, and practice.”

“This is the work of public affairs—Humphrey style.”

“I am excited about Laura leading the Humphrey School,” said Chief U.S. District Judge John Tunheim, who chairs the dean’s advisory council at the School. “She wants to bring people together, across cultural divides and political differences, to address the most pressing challenges facing our cities and state, our nation, and the world. It’s a vision I know Hubert Humphrey would be excited about, too.”

Noting that the Humphrey School is celebrating its 40th year in 2017, Bloomberg also highlighted the accomplishments of nearly two dozen faculty and alumni who are “working to change the world.”

“Hubert Humphrey described his vision of leadership as a relentless, prudent, and probing concern for the future,” Bloomberg said. “I would add to this description that the dean of the Humphrey School must bring a relentless drive toward excellence and justice in pursuit of our common good. I intend to do just that.”

Bloomberg became dean of the Humphrey School in June after serving as associate dean for four years.  Carissa Slotterback succeeds Bloomberg as associate dean.
