Faculty advisor
- Specific to his/her area of academic and professional expertise, works with assigned advisees to provide advice, counsel, and guidance regarding concentration and elective course selection, internships, professional connections, and career options
- Helps advisees understand professional goals and assists in designing concentration and elective courses to meet those goals
- Faculty advisor does not necessarily serve as committee chair or committee member on final professional paper or theses
- May assist advisee in identifying and selecting paper committee members and/or chair
- For final papers where he/she serves as committee chair, supervises and ensures completion of professional papers and masters theses (Plan A or Plan B) by end of relevant semester, setting and communicating clear expectations regarding timelines, format, etc. for paper completion
- May serve on paper committees for both advisees and non-advisees

- Use faculty time effectively by coming to meetings prepared with focused, professional questions
- Read and respond to all emails and correspondence from faculty advisor
- Follow recommended timelines for professional paper completion*

In collaboration and consultation with program faculty, GSS professional academic advisors and assistants may provide the following:
- Serves as first advising contact to explore student interests, first-semester registration, & faculty advising recommendations
- Assists in designing a plan to complete the program, including selection of concentrations and courses
- Reviews Program Planning Worksheets, Degree Programs, requests for exceptions, and petitions
- Monitors student progress throughout the program
- Provides advise on academic policies, processes, and procedures
- Connects students with specific faculty, based on academic, paper, internship, and/or career interests
- Provides support and resources when students encounter academic or personal difficulties that are affecting degree progress
- Works with student recruitment and prospective student advising during the admissions process

Student Responsibilities

- Be aware of registration and drop/add deadlines and register in a timely fashion
- Read and respond to all University, Humphrey, GSS, and advisor emails and correspondence
- Complete required paperwork in a timely manner, as prompted by GSS emails & posted deadlines
- Inform GSS of changes in concentration, Degree Program, graduation date, contact information, name, etc.
- Inform GSS and faculty advisor of potential problems and need for assistance before reaching crisis point
- Respect office hours and/or make (and keep) appointments
- Come to meetings prepared with focused, professional questions
