| MATH PREREQUISITE
Required: Basic competence in college level algebra (MPP/MURP, strongly recommended for MPA) and/or calculus (MS-STEP)
You are expected to have competence in basic college algebra and will work with algebraic formulas and concepts in class, including:
- functional notations
- algebraic manipulation of polynomials
- logs and exponentials
- rates of change
- graphic representation of equations.
If it's been more than two years since you studied college-level algebra (or higher) and/or your GRE quantitative scores were below the 50th percentile, it is strongly recommended that you audit a math course or do some review before starting classes this fall. A recommended text for basic algebraic concepts is Forgotten Algebra by Barbara Lee Bleau.
Calculus Review: For students who want to review or introduce themselves to basic calculus concepts, one of many useful texts is Calculus with Applications, Brief Version by Margaret Lial, Charles Miller and Raymond Greenwell. Though it is not required for MPP/MURP/MPA students, it can be useful for further understanding of concepts of policy analysis.
Diagnostic Test:
- Math diagnostic test (pdf)
- Math diagnostic test answers (pdf)
- 2005 Math refresher course materials (pdf, doc)
Look at the links above for a math diagnostic test and answers to help you assess your preparation in the mathematical concepts you need to know to begin our statistics courses this fall. We strongly encourage you to take this self-assessment as soon as possible, to identify areas that you need to brush up on over the summer.
In addition, a math refresher course will be offered before fall semester 2007 begins, and sign-up will also be available on the website. |
