| FINANCIAL AID AND RECIPROCITY
Financial Aid: Merit-Based
If you received merit-based financial aid from the Humphrey Institute, you will be receiving details from Admissions Director Julie Harrold about how the award will be disbursed (including tuition payments, stipends, and/or graduate assistantship assignments) in mid-August.
Financial Aid: Need-Based
Need-based student financial aid is processed through the University's Office of Student Finance (For more information contact 612-624-1111 or 1-800-400-8636). U.S. citizens should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA as soon as possible, if you haven't already, in order to ensure eligibility for need-based aid. The Office of Student Finance will begin putting together the aid packages in July, after the Board of Regents approves the tuition and fees rates in June. You will be informed via your University of Minnesota e-mail account, so make sure to initiate your U of MN account and e-mail before the end of June.
Keep in mind that except for work-study, all need-based aid for graduate students will be in the form of loans, not grants. Though graduate students are eligible for work-study, the Office of Student Finance no longer automatically awards work-study funds to graduate students (because many graduate students do not use work-study funds).
If you would like to be considered for work-study funds, please contact the Office of Student Finance and ask a service representative if you are eligible for work-study, and to include that option in your financial aid package. Work-study funds can be applied toward graduate assistantship salaries, so if you are awarded work-study, you should not turn it down until you are sure you won't be able to use it. On the other hand, since the total award is a combination of loans and work study, any work-study funds accepted will reduce your loan eligibility. If you will not use the work-study funding and it is offered to you, you should decline it so that you can be eligible for additional loan resources.
