MASTER OF URBAN REGIONAL PLANNING DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The degree requires a total of forty-eight (48) credits, including:

*See Academics for details

Specialization sheets are available in Room 225.

Capstone workshop requirement (3 credits)

Students in the final semester of the MURP program take a workshop for three (3) credits that constitutes a final professional-level project. Students work as part of a team for a community client on a project concerned with a major development issue. The project findings are presented to the client in both a written report and oral presentation.

Electives or Plan A thesis credits
(to bring total credits to 48)

Students may take the remainder of their MURP courses as "free" electives (unless you choose the Plan A track). All coursework included on your degree program must be graduate level (course numbers 4XXX and above) and must meet the approval of your adviser and the director of graduate studies.

Internship requirement

A professional level internship consisting of a minimum of 400 hours of work is required for the MPP and MURP degrees. Typically the internship is completed during the summer between the first and second years. However, internships may be done at any point before the end of the program. The requirement may be waived for individuals with substantial relevant work experience.

Final paper

As of fall 2001, MURP students have the following options:

  • a Coursework Only (CWO) MURP degree option (which replaced the Plan B degree option for students who started after 2001).
  • a Plan A MURP degree option, which requires a master's thesis.
  • MURP students who entered before fall 2001 also have a Plan B option available to them.

Students in the CWO option are required to complete a Professional Paper. No final oral exam is required.

Students selecting a Plan A MURP degree must complete a thesis and an oral defense.

Students who entered before fall 2001 and select a Plan B option write a Plan B paper (similar to the Professional Paper). A final oral exam is required, and this is the main difference between the Plan B and CWO options.
