1. one committee member MUST be a Humphrey faculty member with graduate faculty status
2. a student’s faculty advisor may serve on their paper committee, but it is not required
3. a practitioner with substantial knowledge of the chosen paper topic may serve on a student’s professional paper committee
4. One committee member must be designated as the paper supervisor and be
active throughout the paper writing/revision process; if the paper
supervisor is not a Humphrey faculty member, it is
recommended that an initial meeting be held with this person and the
student’s faculty advisor to discuss the requirements and standards of
the professional paper.
5. if choosing a working group, it is not necessary for the working group instructor to be part of the student’s committee
Once the paper is approved by the paper supervisor, the oral presentation to the committee may take place. It is the responsibility of the student to coordinate schedules and reserve a room for the oral presentation. To reserve a Humphrey conference room, contact the Front Desk staff in Room 130 (612-626-8910 or hhhfdesk@umn.edu).
The oral presentation, which typically lasts about an hour, will usually begin with a brief presentation of the professional paper by the student to the committee. A discussion will follow. It is not unusual for committee members to ask students for changes in the paper. Each committee member signs the paper when it is judged satisfactory (after revisions, if necessary). Students should plan their time lime so that the presentation and all revisions can be completed prior to the deadlines found on the Degree Completion Table.
