| RACE, GENDER, AND PUBLIC POLICY FELLOWS 2008-2009
Sonia Beatriz dos Santos received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. During her doctoral program she focused on the African Diaspora, examining Black women’s activism and the struggle for sexual and reproductive rights in Brazil. She plans to publish her academic work in both English and Portuguese, contributing significantly to the field of Afro-Brazilian Women’s Studies. While at the Humphrey Institute, Dr. dos Santos will teach a graduate seminar entitled, “Sexual and Reproductive Health Policies and Race, Gender, Class, and Sexuality: Looking at Black Women’s Experiences” during the Spring 2009 term.

Teresa Terrell received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Vanderbilt University, focusing her academic work on issues of inequality, race and ethnicity, community, urban poverty, and social movements. Her dissertation explored civic participation processes in inner city areas of Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Terrell has been an adjunct and assistant professor at Vanderbilt, Fisk, and Athens State Universities, teaching a variety of courses touching on social movements and social change. While at the Humphrey Institute, she will teach a graduate seminar entitled, “Civic Participation in Urban Poor Neighborhoods: Theory, Strategy, and Structures” during the Spring 2009 term.
