PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS

As the public affairs arm of the University of Minnesota, the Humphrey Institute has an on-going commitment to public affairs and planning professionals. The Institute offers several opportunities for practitioners to enhance their skills and experience and for those in other professions to increase their involvement with public policy issues.

Faculty members and staff can design non-credit customized professional development programs for organizations, professionals, and community leaders on topics ranging from collaborative management to strategic planning to stakeholder analysis and public participation strategies. To learn more, contact Kimberly Borton at (612) 626-1337 or borto014@umn.edu.

Each year, the Feminist Leadership Fellowship Program supports and challenges 20 executive directors of women-centered nonprofits to build new and stronger networks to support their work, and develop a critical framework within which to address how topical issues affect both their long-term mission and day-to-day activities. To learn more, contact Deb Fitzpatrick at (612) 625-7176 or harex004@umn.edu.

The Policy Fellows program offers practical training in public affairs leadership for emerging leaders seeking new experiences and skills. Offered each fall through a competitive application process, the nine-month program offers a cohort of 40 diverse individuals the opportunity to learn such core leadership competencies as mindfulness, strategic effectiveness in context, and persuasion and collective action. To learn more, contact Kate Cimino at 612-625-8330 or katek@umn.edu.

Training

In 2007, the Institute’s Center for the Study of Politics and Governance launched the Program for Excellence in Election Administration to serve township, city, county, and state-level election staff, elected officials, county attorneys and auditors, and citizen leaders. Research into best practices is integrated into short-courses, on-line courses, seminars, conferences, and national forums addressing the key challenges facing election administrators and legislators setting election policy. To learn more, contact Lea Chittenden at (612) 625-2530 or chit0018@umn.edu.

Staff members from the Center for Democracy and Citizenship conduct civic engagement workshops and presentations that bridge theory and practice and provide the opportunity for reflection. Training is offered for different audiences on such topics as issue development and citizen action; understanding power; organizing through relationship-building; young people as resources; and creating welcoming communities. To learn more, contact Elaine Eschenbacher at (612) 625-5536 or eschenbacher@umn.edu.
