Biography

Walter F. Mondale is a partner with the international law firm of Dorsey & Whitney LLP, where he chairs the firm's Asia Law Practice Group, a large and fast-growing practice representing American and Asian clients on a wide range of corporate, regulatory and financial matters.

Mondale's distinguished record of public service includes Vice President of the United States, Ambassador to Japan, U.S. Senator, and Attorney General of Minnesota. As President Jimmy Carter’s vice president from 1976 to 1980, he transformed the office of the vice presidency, serving as a full-time participant, advisor, and troubleshooter for the Administration. Mondale was appointed Ambassador to Japan by President Clinton and served in that position from 1993 to 1996. As Ambassador, Mondale helped to negotiate several United States-Japan security agreements, including a resolution to the controversy about the U.S. military presence in Okinawa, and helped to forge numerous trade agreements between the United States and Japan. In March 1998, serving as President Clinton's special envoy, he traveled to Indonesia to meet with President Suharto regarding the Asian financial crisis and economic reforms in Indonesia.

In addition to the dean's advisory council of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, Mondale serves on the boards of directors of the BlackRock Funds, CNA Financial Corporation, Dain Rauscher, Northwest Airlines, St. Jude Medical, and UnitedHealth Group. He is senior Japan advisor to Goldman Sachs & Co. He also serves on the boards of the Japan Society, Mayo Foundation, Minnesota Public Radio, and University of Minnesota Foundation. He is on the executive committee of the Peace Prize Forum, an annual conference co-sponsored by the Norwegian Nobel Institute and five Midwestern colleges of Norwegian heritage.

Mondale attended Macalester College and is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota Law School.
