Areas of expertise: immigrant and refugee policy; social networks; urban planning in diverse communities
Ryan Allen is an assistant professor of community and economic development in the policy and regional planning area. His research focuses on the community and economic development processes of immigrants in the United States. In particular, Allen is interested in how immigrants use social capital and how its use can help and hinder the community and economic development of immigrant communities. His practical research approach to these topics draws upon the strengths of multiple disciplines, including sociology, economics, and political science, and takes advantage of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Allen received his bachelor's degree in economics and history from the College of William and Mary and earned a master's degree in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He recently completed his Ph.D. in urban studies and planning at MIT.
