Michael O. Freeman is the elected Hennepin County Attorney. Mike has served as the Hennepin County Attorney since 2001, as well as two terms from 1991 to 1999. As the County Attorney, Freeman serves as the chief executive of Minnesota’s largest public office, comprised of about 400 employees. He has developed several innovative programs as Hennepin County Attorney, including the Domestic Abuse Service Center for victims of domestic violence, and the Gun Buy Back program, which resulted in recapturing more than 6,000 guns from the street. Freeman launched child protection programs including sex offender ID and prosecution; enforced strict curfew and truancy laws to support children and safe communities; and broad, innovative efforts toward crime prevention at its sources.
Freeman also has served on the Board of Directors for Summit Academy OIC, the Board of Regents at Augsburg College, and on the board of the Minnesota Private College Council. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School and Augsburg College. He received his B.A. from Rutgers College and his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and has completed coursework in executive leadership with the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
