John E. Brandl is interested in state government politics and finance, as well as social policy and education policy. In the federal government, he has worked in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Office of Economic Opportunity, and the Economic Development Administration. Before coming to the Institute he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. For twelve years Brandl was a member of the Minnesota Legislature, on partial leave from his professorship at the Institute.
Brandl has held faculty positions at Boston College, Harvard University, St. John's University (Minnesota), the University of Wisconsin, the University of Philippines, and the Sydney University. He has been president of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management and of the Citizens League of the Twin Cities.
Brandl has received the American Evaluation Association's President's Prize for Outstanding Career Contributions to the Understanding of Evaluation and Politics, and the National Governors Association Award for Distinguished Service to State Government. His book, Money and Good Intentions Are Not Enough, was published by the Brookings Institution Press in 1998.
He earned master's and doctorate degrees in economics at Harvard University.
