Richard S. Bolan, professor of planning and public affairs, directs the master of planning program. Before joining the institute in 1985, he was a professor of social planning at Boston College and edited the Journal of the American Institute of Planners. Bolan works primarily in the theoretical issues of planned social change, with recent emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe.
He has co-written major planning documents in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria and written a major research report, Poland's Path to Sustainable Development: 1989-1993. He also has published works on planning theory and social and environmental planning. Bolan was on the staff of the Joint Center for Urban Studies of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University and was director of renewal planning for the Boston Redevelopment Authority.
He received a master of City Planning degree from MIT and a doctorate from New York University.
