Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement:
A Radical Democratic Vision

September 29, 5 p.m. | Freeman Commons (Room 205)

The Humphrey School's Center on Women and Public Policy will host a discussion of Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement: A Radical Democratic Vision by Barbara Ransby from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, in Freeman Commons (Room 205). This is the first of the Women and Politics Book Group meetings of fall 2011. One of the most important African-American leaders of the twentieth century, Ella Baker (1903-1986) was an activist whose remarkable career spanned 50 years and touched thousands of lives. In this deeply researched biography, Ransby chronicles Baker's long and rich political career as an organizer, an intellectual, and a teacher, from her early experiences in depression-era Harlem to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Beyond documenting an extraordinary life, the book paints a vivid picture of the African-American fight for justice and its intersections with other progressive struggles worldwide.
