Silent Night: Discussion About Dissent in a Time of War

A collaboration between the Minnesota Opera and Humphrey School


What

A discussion of the public policy issues highlighted in the Minnesota Opera’s new opera Silent Night, based on the story of Christmas Eve, 1914, when Scottish, French, and German officers defied their superiors and called a one-night truce to celebrate the holiday together.

Background

The panel will explore the opera’s themes of war, dissent, and discipline during WWI, panelists will tackle contemporary issues of military policy. Musical selections will be presented by composer Kevin Puts and cast members of Silent Night.

The Humphrey School ranks among the top professional schools of public affairs at public universities in the country. The Institute is widely recognized for its role in examining public issues and shaping policy and planning at the local, state, national, and international levels, as well as for providing leadership and management expertise to public and nonprofit organizations. The Institute offers four graduate degrees, plus a Master in Development Practice degree in international development that will welcome its first cohort in August 2010.
