Community News

Community Fund Drive update
From Gary DeCramer: Our Community Fund drive is off and running. We now have 12% of Humphrey employees pledging. Winners of last week's drawing: Stacey Grimes, Avis Held, Barbara Crosby and yours truly (Barbara Sullivan said it was okay for me to enter and sure enough, I was lucky). October 19 at 12 p.m. is the next drawing for prizes for all who have pledged and filled out the form at the front desk. On October 26, free pizza will be served from 12 to 1 p.m., sponsored by Dean Schwartz. Our new dean will be on hand to urge all employees to make their pledge. Barbara and I know we can do better than 12% participation. Let's make Dean Schwartz and ourselves feel great by exceeding last year's rate of 32% participation.

Outstanding University women honored
The Office for Equity and Diversity, the Office of Human Resources, the Office for Faculty and Academic Affairs, and the Women's Center will honor outstanding University women at their 2011 awards, Friday, October 21, at 3 p.m. Our own Laura Bloomberg will offer the opening remarks entitled, "Turning to One Another," and MPP student Ami Wazlawik will receive the Sharon Doherty Student Leadership Award. The ceremony is free and open to the public, and RSVPs are required here. Congratulations, Ami!

Working group opportunities with the Diversity Committee
From Karen McCauley: I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of a significant way to impact life here at the Humphrey School. The Diversity Committee has four working groups - all of which are open to anyone who wants to join and make their voice heard. The Diversity Committee's role is to generate discussion and initiatives that value and actively promote diversity, and most of the work happens in these groups. They are: 1) One Humphrey, One Community (OHOC); 2) Recruitment and Retention; 3) Curriculum; and 4) Communications. For more information, please e-mail me or Ryan Allen, the committee chair.

Congrations MURP award winners!
Congratulations to several MURP students who were among those recieving awards at the American Planning Association Minnesota Chapter Conference in St. Cloud. Hilary Holmes and Tony Wotzka received the Isberg Student Scholarship, and 2011 MURP graduates Anders Imboden, Lyssa Leitner, Lindsey Knutson, and Kelly Muellman received the Outstanding Student Project for Wooddale Station Redevelopment Framework completed in Lee Munnich and the late Kris Nelson's spring 2011 capstone course. Congratulations!

Second floor renovations announced
Thanks in part to a substantial contribution from the Provost, second floor of the Humphrey School will soon be updated along the lines of the successful first floor renovation. The plan is to renovate the second floor non-office areas by installing new cubes, furniture, and carpet. Private offices also will be re-carpeted. As with the first floor, our goals are to create more flexible space, expand capacity, make more meeting and collaborative group work space available, let in more natural light, and make it easier to find people. Sherri Holmen will again lead the design process in consultation with second floor faculty members, staff and students. Given the knowledge gained from the first floor remodeling project and to minimize disruption to second floor occupants, this renovation will take place over the holiday break.

Douma addresses a "Collage of Sustainability"
The State and Local Policy program's Frank Douma took part in the University's Regional Sustainable Development Partnership's "Collage of Sustainability" conference on October 13. The conference tackled economically smart and environmentally sound land use, energy, economic development, and transportation options, and kicks off a yearlong series of public conferences and community-based meetings sponsored by the HUD-funded Center Minnesota Sustainable Development Plan.
