Hubert H. Humphrey: The Art of the Possible

Hubert H. Humphrey: The Art of the Possible

Filmmaker Mick Caouette spent almost a decade making this moving, no-holds-barred documentary about one of America's greatest legislators: Hubert H. Humphrey. He interviewed dozens of friends and colleagues to render a portrait of a public servant who is as inspirational today as he was when he served his community and his nation as mayor of Minneapolis, U.S. Senator, and Vice President of the United States.

"I was among more than a thousand people who watched, laughed, gasped, and wept at Mick Caouette's Hubert H. Humphrey: The Art of the Possible during a screening in Minneapolis. It is a powerful film about arguably the most important United States Senator of the 20th century whose great personal courage shaped the world we live in.

"This is far more than just the riveting account of  an exuberant  public figure whose life was marked by both triumph and tragedy; it also is an important and fresh  exploration of  American history."

— Bill Moyers

A word from the filmmaker: Mick Caouette

Mick Caouette: The Art of the Possible

In the late fall of 1999 I began what was to become a ten-year project—a full-length film biography of Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey.  As I was introduced to the Humphrey archive, I was struck by the sheer volume of his life's work.

The Minnesota Historical Society alone holds more that 1,200 large manuscript boxes, 10,000 films and videos, audio tapes, and photographs extensively chronicling a dedicated career in public service. A decade later, after 52 interviews in 10 cities and too many detours to mention, the film is complete. Along the road, I gained so much more.
