ABOUT THE FIFTY YEARS PROJECT

Walter F. Mondale's career in public service has spanned some of the most dramatic events in our nation's history. Since 1948 he has been at history's center, first as a young campaign organizer, then as Minnesota attorney general, U.S. senator, vice president, presidential candidate, and U.S. ambassador to Japan.

Now Mondale is taking a fresh and honest look at some of the events and issues with which he was deeply involved. FIFTY YEARS isn't a tell-all memoir, but a deeply personal look at what leaders face as they grapple with the daunting and often divisive challenges in America's public life.

We hope these lectures encourage public discussion about the lessons of these historic events, and inspire people to pursue their own dreams of public service today.

Walter F. Mondale biography

Walter F. Mondale served as U.S. vice president under President Jimmy Carter from 1976 to 1980 and was the Democratic nominee for president in 1984. He was U.S. ambassador to Japan from 1993 to 1996, and represented Minnesota in the U.S. Senate from 1965 to 1976, where he served on the finance, agriculture, labor and public welfare, budget, and banking, housing and urban affairs committees.

Mondale wrote the book The Accountability of Power: Toward a Responsible Presidency in 1975 and has published numerous articles on domestic and international issues. He currently is a partner at the international law firm of Dorsey & Whitney LLP, where he chairs the firm’s Asia practice, and is senior Japan advisor to Goldman Sachs & Co. He serves as a director or trustee of the Japan Society, Mayo Foundation, Minnesota Public Radio, Peace Prize Forum, and University of Minnesota Foundation.
