| LOUIS W. HILL, JR. FELLOWSHIP IN PHILANTHROPY
 The Louis W. Hill, Jr. Fellowship in Philanthropy was created in 2002 by the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, the Northwest Area Foundation, and the Grotto Foundation to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Louis W. Hill, Jr. The fellowship recognizes an outstanding Minnesota community leader who has had a distinguished record in philanthropy and community service. The fellowship brings these leaders to the Humphrey Institute to work with faculty members to research, document, and otherwise reflect on their experience in philanthropy and community service. Beginning in 2003, one fellow has been selected each year.
The fellow receives a $100,000 stipend and infrastructure support for his or her work. During their fellowship, Hill Fellows collaborate with faculty members and fellows from the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs and participate in lectures, workshops, and other educational opportunities for students. The fellows' findings are shared at a symposium hosted by the Humphrey Institute at the end of the fellowship period.
The Northwest Area Foundation and the Grotto Foundation were created by the son and grandson (respectively) of James J. Hill, the railroad magnate. Together, the foundations have committed $1,000,000 in gifts to support the fellowship over the five years of the program.
Noted philanthropist Louis W. Hill, Jr. served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1937 to 1951. |
