CHANCE, JANE ADDAMS SCHOOL, AND HUMPHREY STUDENT ADAM MALEITZKE HONORED BY U OF M FOR COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

Public Engagement Day 2008Humphrey Institute community members were recognized as outstanding community partners by the University of Minnesota's Campus Community Coordinators Alliance (CCCA) at the University's second annual Public Engagement Day, Tuesday, April 22. Congratulations to the Jane Addams School for Democracy, CHANCE, and Humphrey Institute graduate student Adam Maleitzke. All were recognized for their efforts to build community-university partnerships that serve the common good.

CHANCE was founded in 2006 by students and staff members at the Humphrey Institute who wanted to connect the Institute with the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Since then, CHANCE has evolved into a larger initiative known as West Bank CHANCE. Through collaboration among the University's West Bank schools, institutions, and Cedar-Riverside residents and business owners, West Bank CHANCE works to improve relationships and outreach opportunities between the University and local residents.

The Jane Addams School is a community outreach initiative of the Center for Democracy and Citizenship. In partnership with several community organizations on the West Side of St. Paul, CDC staff members coordinate this citizenship and education program for immigrant families and college students. Special congratulations to Derek Johnson, Deb Klein, Kong Her, Nan Skelton, and Erik Skold.

Adam Maleitzke is pursuing a joint degree in urban and regional planning (from the Humphrey Institute) and landscape architecture (from the College of Design). For the past few years, he has worked with the Center on Urban and Regional Affairs on designing streetscape plans for neighborhoods in northeast Minneapolis. He currently is director of U-PLAN, a non-profit community planning studio that provides planning and design support to businesses, residents, and organizations along the University Avenue corridor in St. Paul.
