DEAN ATWOOD DELIVERS PETITION FOR INCREASED GLOBAL EDUCATION YOUTH PROGRAMS

On June 6, Dean J. Brian Atwood chaired the annual board meeting of AFS Intercultural Programs, held at the United Nations in New York. The organization celebrated the conclusion of a global yearlong petition drive to gather signatures in support of peace through youth exchange programs. Atwood and others from AFS delivered the petition, with nearly 400,000 signatures, to the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in hopes of expanding intercultural opportunities worldwide.
“The exchange of youth from one society to another creates a deep understanding of another culture not only in the hearts and minds of the students, but also in those who host those students. Our petition recognizes that this experience is the beginning of the road to peace,” says Atwood.
The Petition Presentation Ceremony was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the organizations that supported the petition, and AFS participants, board members, and staff.
