| Discussion on the implications of the abortion battle in South Dakota on October 24 In 2006, the South Dakota legislature and governor passed a law that would
ban nearly all abortions, the strictest ruling in the country. Opponents led
a movement to bring the issue to the voters on the 2006 ballot. In Navigating
Conflict: Planned Parenthood's Strategy in South Dakota, CEO Sarah Stoesz will talk
about this effort in conversation with Humphrey Institute lecturer Steve
Sviggum, former legislator and long-time pro-life advocate. This free program
will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, in Cowles Auditorium.
Following remarks from Stoesz, Star Tribune writer Lori Sturdevant will
moderate a conversation that will include questions from the audience. Why did
Planned Parenthood choose an electoral strategy rather than file a lawsuit?
Are there broader political implications on how we handle divisive issues in
our country? Should the general public determine policy issues or should legislators
and the court system hold more cards?
This program is sponsored by the Center
for the Study of Politics and Governance. Registration is not required.
