Congresswoman Betty McCollum will headline a public forum on landmine abatement in Laos at the Humphrey Institute

The Vietnam War is long over, but landmines and unexploded ordinance (UXO) still directly-and indirectly-affect the people of Southeast Asia. “The Long-term Costs of War: Landmine Abatement in Laos” will feature a panel discussion on this issue among Congresswoman Betty McCollum and representatives from the U.S. State Department and HDI from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, April 10, at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.

The panelists will focus on the “Laos Back to School Project,” a renewed effort initiated by HDI to remove Vietnam War-era landmines surrounding schools in this Southeast Asian nation. The project was designed to improve basic education and address major barriers to school attendance, such as landmines and UXO, in the Khammouane province of Laos.

“The Long-term Costs of War” is another program in the Humphrey Institute's Home and Away series. Throughout 2006–2007, Home and Away programs have been held to examine the domestic and foreign policy implications of the United States at war.
