| Robert Kudrle appointed to the Orville and Jane Freeman Chair in International Trade and Investment Policy The Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs is pleased to announce the appointment
of Dr. Robert Kudrle
to the Orville and Jane Freeman Chair in International Trade and Investment
Policy. Kudrle will lead the Institutes Freeman
Center for International Economic Policy, which identifies and analyzes
the major challenges of an increasingly interdependent global economy.
Bob Kudrle is a highly regarded social scientist who will bring a broad
perspective as well as a keen intellect to the issues of trade and investment
policy development, said Dean J. Brian Atwood. Increasingly, local
economies are subject to global conditions. What happens in India is as important
as what is going on in Indiana or Inver Grove Heights.
After earning an undergraduate degree in government from Harvard, Kudrle received
an M.Phil. in economics from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and a Ph.D. in economics
from Harvard. He has been a member of the faculty of the Humphrey Institute
and its predecessor, the School of Public Affairs, since 1972, and he served
as associate dean for research from 1992 to 1996. He is an affiliated faculty
member with the Universitys Law School and Department of Political Science.
I am delighted that Robert Kudrle will hold the Freeman Chair,
said Mrs. Jane C. Freeman, who, with her husband, the late Governor Orville
Freeman, established the professorship. He helped to formulate the plan
for the Freeman Center and, because of his extensive experience, he is well
suited to expand cooperation and outreach for global understanding. In addition,
my husband would be pleased that Dr. Kudrles expertise in tax policy and
global development will enhance the capacity of the Freeman Center to raise
public understanding of living successfully in our interdependent world.
Kudrle has written or edited several books and has published in major journals
in international relations, economics, and law, including The Journal of
Conflict Resolution, International Organization, World Politics,
The Canadian Journal of Economics, Public Finance, The Journal
of Law and Economics, and The Antitrust Law Journal. He has served
as co-editor of International Studies Quarterly. Kudrle has consulted
for a variety of agencies, including the Antitrust Division of the Department
of Justice, the Agency for International Development, the Internal Revenue Service,
the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, Competition Canada, and the United
Nations Conference on Trade and Development. His current research focuses on
international cooperation in antitrust policy and on internationally coordinated
policy to combat tax avoidance through investment in tax havens.
He was honored last year by the International Studies Association as co-recipient
of the organizations first Ladd Hollist Service Award.
Kudrle succeeds Regents Professor G. Edward Schuh as Freeman Chair. Schuh retired
from the University on November 17, 2006.
