The Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs will host the 2007 Hubert
H. Humphrey Public Leadership Awards on Wednesday, May 16, at the McNamara
Alumni Center. This year¿s recipients are Senator John C. Danforth, former
U.S. Senator from Missouri and Ambassador to the United Nations; Josie R. Johnson,
civil rights leader and educator; Eugene C. Sit, founder and co-chair of the
Minnesotans¿ Military Appreciation Fund; and Harlan Cleveland, former ambassador
to NATO and founding dean of the Humphrey Institute. The Institute also will
spotlight the Women's Foundation of Minnesota
to recognize its commitment to cultivating leadership among young women through
board service and other leadership development opportunities. A reception begins
at 6 p.m., and the dinner and program, including remarks from the award recipients,
begins at 7 p.m.
The Hubert H. Humphrey Public Leadership Awards honor individuals, organizations,
or projects that have made contributions to the common good through public leadership
and service. The Public Leadership Awards were inaugurated in 2003 to mark the
25th anniversary of the Institute. Recipients are nominated by outside individuals
and selected by a committee.
We have celebrated Minnesota's leaders for five years through the Public
Leadership Awards, and each year we are inspired by the recipients, said
Humphrey Institute Dean J. Brian Atwood. Our namesake, Hubert H. Humphrey,
would be so proud to know that these public servants are being honored in his
name.
To support future leaders, the gala dinner also is a scholarship fundraiser.
Proceeds from the event benefit a student scholarship initiative of the Humphrey
Institute Dean¿s
Advisory Council. Since its inception in 2003, the Public Leadership Awards
dinner has raised more than $300,000.
The Humphrey Institute is dedicated to educating and inspiring innovative
leaders for the common good, said Keith Halleland, advisory council chair.
The proceeds from the awards dinner allow us to fulfill that mission by
attracting exceptional students who also are committed to creating positive
change in the world.
