Secretary Condoleezza Rice has appointed Dean J. Brian Atwood to Advisory Committee on Democracy Promotion

Brian Atwood recently was appointed to the U.S. State Department's Advisory Committee on Democracy Promotion, a bipartisan committee that provides Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice advice on issues related to democracy promotion around the world. Atwood will serve a two-year term; he is joined by experts in foreign policy and democracy promotion including former U.S. government officials and representatives of corporations, nongovernmental organizations, public policy organizations, and academic institutions. The committee's recommendations are intended to advance efforts to foster democratic principles and institutions worldwide.

In Atwood's first committee meeting April 16, 2007, members met at length with Secretary Rice to discuss the link between democracy and economic development. A transcript and video from the meeting is available online.
