General Colin L. Powell will headline the 2006 Distinguished Carlson Lecture October 3

Rush seating, resulting from unused tickets, will be available on the day of the event. Tickets are free. The rush line will form at the Northrop Auditorium box office at 11 a.m. Persons requesting rush tickets will receive a number in line and will be seated in order beginning at noon. The lecture program begins at 12:15 p.m.

The Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs will present the 2006 Distinguished Carlson Lecture featuring General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.) from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, at Northrop Memorial Auditorium, 84 Church St. SE, Minneapolis. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Powell has been a leader for most of his life, having led troops as both a military leader-as chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff-and as Secretary of State. In his speech, "Leadership: Taking Charge," Powell will talk about what it takes to be a leader during times of great change and great crises.

Powell's speech is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

Those attending the event must know the following:

  • Northrop Memorial Auditorium doors open at 11:30 a.m.
  • All persons must have a ticket, regardless of age.
  • The University of Minnesota is not responsible for lost or stolen tickets.
  • This ticket is free and is not to be sold.
  • Public parking may be available at the 4th Street Ramp, at the intersection of
  • 4th Street and 17th Avenue S.E.; the Washington Avenue Ramp, next to the
  • Radisson Hotel; or the University Avenue Ramp, on University Avenue at Walnut Street S.E.
  • Disability parking is available in the Church Street Garage on Pleasant Street and on Pillsbury Drive north of the auditorium. A State of Minnesota disability permit or license plate is required. Patrons also may be dropped off at the accessible entrance on the east side of the auditorium via the driveway circling the Church Street Garage.

The Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series is made possible by a gift from Carlson Companies, Inc. For over 25 years, the lecture series has hosted renowned public leaders from across the globe including President Bill Clinton, his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, and her majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden.
