| Lecture and discussion on "Federal Spending in Minnesota" on April 28
The State and
Local Policy Program will host a lecture and discussion with Matt Kane,
a senior policy analyst with the Northeast-Midwest
Institute, from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, in the Wilkins Room (215
HHH). Kane will speak on "Federal Spending in Minnesota: Why is Minnesota's
Return on Its Federal Tax Dollar So Low?"
The Northeast-Midwest Institute is a Washington-based, private, non-profit,
and non-partisan research organization dedicated to economic vitality, environmental
quality, and regional equity for Northeast and Midwest states. As part of its
activities, the Institute annually tracks federal spending to each state and
estimates its returns on federal tax dollars paid to the government. Minnesota
has ranked near the bottom of the list for years (when comparing the states
federal spending to its federal taxes), yet Minnesota is a wealthier state than
most and pays more in taxes on average. Kane will speak about what drives Minnesotas
return on federal tax dollars and discuss the resulting implications for politics,
policy, and the Minnesota economy. To learn more about the Institute's federal
spending analysis, click

Professor Ann Markusen,
Senior Fellow Jay Kiedrowski,
and Doug Petty, CEO
of the Great North Alliance, will take part in a discussion following Kane's
presentation.
There is no charge to attend, but RSVPs are requested by contacting Janice
