Governing Magazine editor Peter Harkness will discuss the relationship between states and Congress on January 8

The Center for the Study of Politics and Governance will host “The States of the States: Challenges and Opportunities” with Governing Magazine editor and publisher Peter Harkness. The free event will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 8, in Cowles Auditorium.

When members of congress collide on the issues, state government officials pick up the reigns and have shaped national policy on a wide range of issues such as immigration, healthcare, and global warming. What do the recent elections mean for states? Will Congress and the administration reassert themselves or will governors and state legislators continue to fill the policy solutions vacuum? Harkness will address these questions.

Harkness has been editor and publisher of Governing Magazine since it was founded 16 years ago. Governing is a monthly magazine that provides news and analysis of state and local government. He also was executive editor and deputy publisher of Congressional Quarterly for many years.

Sponsored by the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance, the event is free and open to the public but registration is encouraged. For more information and to RSVP, contact cspg@umn.edu or (612) 625-2530.
