See the war through artists' eyes at the Humphrey School November 2

See the war through artists' eyes at the Humphrey School November 2

How are contemporary artists responding to the war in Iraq? How have artists addressed issues raised by past wars? Join three speakers who take on these questions at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 2, in Cowles Auditorium.

John Kinder, a doctoral candidate in American Studies, will discuss his dissertation, which examines a poster campaign during World War I when artists were enlisted to help address the problems of wounded soldiers' return to society. Colleen Sheehy, the director of education at the University's Weisman Art Museum, will discuss the varied responses to the Iraq War taken by a number of contemporary artists. Camille J. Gage, a visual artist whose work in varied media often engages in social and political commentary, will talk about her recent series War, Redacted and an ongoing activist piece Iraq KIA WIA.

“Art and War” is cosponsored by the Humphrey School, the Weisman Art Museum, and the University's Department of American Studies. All are invited to attend this free event.

This program is part of the Humphrey School's series “Home and Away,” a series of public programs examining issues related to war. Programs will be held throughout the 2006-07 academic year. The next event in this series, “Update from the Fronts,” will be held November 15.
