Fauriol (right photo) of the International Republican Institute (IRI) will discuss the role of elections in emerging democracies from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, in Cowles Auditorium.

With the recent elections in Iraq, Haiti, and the Palestinian Territories making front-page news, this program offers the opportunity to discuss the importance and implications of these and other elections for the advancement of democracy with two representatives of organizations dedicated to this issue.

NDI is a nonprofit organization that works to strengthen and expand democracy worldwide. Calling on a global network of volunteer experts, NDI provides practical assistance to civic and political leaders advancing democratic values, practices, and institutions. NDI works with leaders in every region of the world to build political and civic organizations, safeguard elections, and to promote citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. Similarly, the IRI, a nonprofit nonpartisan organization, is dedicated to advancing democracy, freedom, self-government, and the rule of law worldwide.

"The Role of Elections in Expanding Freedom and Building Democracy Worldwide" will begin with registration at 5:30 p.m. and the program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The cost of this event, which is cosponsored by the Minnesota International Center (MIC) and the Center for Victims of Torture, is $5 for MIC members and students, $15 for non-members. To register, visit MIC online or call (612) 625-4421.
