NATIONAL EPERTS DEBATE THE COSTS AND CONSEQUENCES OF SOCIAL SECURITY MAY 17

The Humphrey Institute Policy Forum will host several national experts on Social Security for a discussion and debate on the current system and future reform from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, in Cowles Auditorium. Titled "Social Security: Costs and Consequences," the forum will feature three panels of national experts who will discuss the policy issues and implications of the Social Security system.

"This is an issue that affects men and women of all ages and it is important we take an honest look at the issue from each side of the policy spectrum," said Tim Penny, co-director of the Humphrey Institute Policy Forum which is sponsoring this event. Penny, who is recognized nationally as an expert on this issue will participate in the conference with colleague and Policy Forum co-director Vin Weber.

Each panel will answer a different question facing Social Security. To begin with, speakers will address what the actual problems are; they will then address possible reform ideas; and the last third of the program will look specifically at the impact of Social Security reform on women.

Featured speakers are Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and director of the Fiscal Policy Program at New America Foundation; John Rother, director of policy and strategy for AARP; Charlie Stenholm (D-TX), former congressman and creator of the Public Pension Reform Caucus; Joan Entmacher, vice president and director of Family Economic Security at the National Women's Law Center; and Leanne Abdnor, executive director of Women for a Social Security Choice.
