LECTURE ON DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD SEPTEMBER 27

In recognition of the 100th birthday of the late Dag Hammarskjöld, peace advocate and former Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs will co-host a lecture with the American Swedish Institute on "Hammarskjöld, Ralph Bunche, and the Congo" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 27, in Freeman Commons (HHH 205). All are invited to attend.

The featured speaker is M. Crawford Young, political science professor emeritus of the University of Wisconsin. Young will discuss the "tragic triangle" involving Hammarskjöld, Ralph Bunche, and Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba. The Congo crisis of 1960 and the strains experienced that summer led directly to the untimely deaths of all three men, the effects of which are still felt in the Congo today.

Young's lecture is part of The Dag Hammarskjöld Speaker Series which has included several lectures throughout the year focusing on various aspects of Hammarskjöld's work and life. For more information on upcoming events celebrating Hammarskjöld's life, visit the American Swedish Institute.
