MADELEINE ALBRIGHT WILL SPEAK ON DEMOCRACY IN THE MIDDLE EAST AT THE HUMPHREY INSTITUTE DECEMBER 8

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will join Humphrey Institute Senior Fellow Vin Weber for a policy forum discussion on democracy in the Middle East from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, December 8, at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. This event also will be broadcast live via the web.

In 2004, Albright and Weber co-chaired a bipartisan task force convened by the Council on Foreign Relations to answer the question of whether promoting democracy in the Middle East is in the best interest of the United States. This will be the first public forum held to discuss their report, "In Support of Arab Democracy: Why and How."

The task force's foreign policy experts concluded that expanding democracy in the Arab world is a desirable goal, and in the report they issued detailed political, economic, and social recommendations for achieving that goal.

Following remarks from Albright and Weber, they will be joined by members from the task force and local respondents for a panel discussion on the role of the United States-and strategies used-in bringing political reform to the Arab world.

This event is co-sponsored by the Humphrey Institute Policy Forum and the Council on Foreign Relations. The Humphrey Institute Policy Forum, co-directed by former Minnesota Congressmen Tim Penny and Weber, is part of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the Humphrey Institute. The Policy Forum organizes public conferences and leadership development activities related to current public policy issues.

The Council on Foreign Relations is an independent, national membership organization and a nonpartisan center for scholars dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas so that individual and corporate members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students, and interested citizens in the United States and other countries, can better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments.

Cooperating organizations include the Center of the American Experiment, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, the Minnesota International Center, and the Muslim American Society of Minnesota.

Seating is limited and advance registration is required by Friday, Dec. 2. Registration is $30.00 and includes continental breakfast. To accommodate those unable to reserve a seat in Cowles Auditorium, overflow seating in the Humphrey Center atrium will be available for $10.
