Jonathan Truong, President

j.m.truongpicHailing from mighty Minnesota, Jonathan “Minhzy” Truong characterizes himself as a b[reak]
-boy, community organizer, and leader. Jonathan represents to the fullest extent his b-boy click Mid-
West Monstaz Kru via competiting at dance competitions and MCing at at the prestigious venues and events like the Guthrie Theater and Minnesota's biggest hip-hop festival, Soundset repsectively. Jonathan also enjoys mentoring at-risk youth of color such as for TRiO’s Upward Bound Program, especially those involved with gang activity. His passions mostly developed during his time as an undergraduate at the Univesity of Wisconsin - Madison. Thankfully, his oppotunity to attend this university was provided by the Powes-Knapp Scholarship.

Currently at the Humphrey, Jonathan serves as a teaching assistant for Dr. Samuel L. Myers' new class "Diversity and Public Policy" and Dr. David Hollister and Dr. Lauren Matin's "Neighborhood Revitalization Strategies and Theories." Jonathan also serves as a student representative on the school's Divesity Committee, which aims to carry out the school's "Diversit Strategic Plan". Without the James Lyday Fellowship, he would not have the opportunity for these new expereinces at the Humphrey.

While at the Humphrey as a Master of Public Policy candidate, Jonathan has thus far gained helpful tools to weave hispassions for hip-hop, diversity, and social justice into creating empowering systems to reduce as well asprevent gang and partner violence in disenfranchised communities and neighborhoods. He lives by themotto “Each One, Teach One, Reach One.” Because of the Humphrey, Jonathan will open up the first ever urban dance studio in the Twin Cities called "House of Dance: 612" in the Spring of 2013.

Romilda Justilien, Vice President

RomildaPicGreetings from Romy! I am Vice President of the Humphrey Student of Color Association, a student
ambassador for the school, and work with PASA with community engagement. I am a first generation
Miami native, who astonishingly hates sand and drinking water. My biggest high in life was winning my first pageant in college, and my sister winning the next year (we both did monologues, unfortunately we can’t sing). I have a strong interest in social equity, family policy, and empowerment evaluation. Last year, I was an Administrative Fellow with the Office of Equity and Diversity looking at retention and evaluation frameworks for students of color here at the U.

The senator I worked with during my tenure at the University of Florida was heavily involved in the
Trayvon Martin case and I hope that America continues the conversation around social justice and boysand men of color. This past summer, I was in Oakland working with PolicyLink to craft a Resource Guide
on how Promise and Choice Neighborhoods can improve outcomes for Black men and boys. This next
year, I am excited to be a Graduate Assistant with Northwest Area Foundation to look at culturally-
sensitive evaluation and poverty alleviation in the Northwest Plains. I love me some black feminist
theory and enjoy religious debates. I may even be a someone’s TA for Policy Analysis with Dr. Myers this
Fall. When I am not working or learning, I am reading romance novels and watching BBC.
