Humphrey ITS Service Desk

What does Humphrey ITS do?
- Provides technology support to faculty, staff, and students.
- Attends to all Humphrey lab issues, including login problems, network access, software problems, etc.
- Attends to printing problems and print accounting at the Institute.
- Attends to issues dealing with logging into Humphrey computers (not including e-mail, NetFiles, and UMCal).
- Installs/configures Thunderbird, installs Symantec Anti-Virus, and assists in connecting to print server and network drive space for personal computers.
All other issues, including email, UMCal, and NetFiles, contact 1-HELP = (612) 301-4357.

Your X500 account will have an associated e-mail address. The address will be your X500id@umn.edu.
The Humphrey School is currently in the process of migrating to Google Apps for email and calendaring.
FAQ about UMN Google Apps
You will need to login to https://www.umn.edu/myaccount and choose 'Google Account Options' and accept the terms to begin migration of your University email account to UMN Google Apps. This will not affect personal Google or GMail accounts.
Accessing Your U of MN E-mail & Calendar
- Open a web browser and go to http://mail.umn.edu.
- Use your U of MN Internet ID and password.
- Call U of MN’s 1-HELP = (612) 301-4357 for e-mail help.
Humphrey Drives
All important data should always be stored on the network drives. Local drives such as C:\ are not backed-up and are regularly wiped of data.

- H drive: My Documents (these are the same)
- O drive: Open Home
- T drive: Courses
Accessing Your Network Drives from Home
For instructions on setting up your computer, connecting and logging in to the network share space from a non-Humphrey computer, go to http://www.hhh.umn.edu/compstaff/drives.html.
Other drives
- C:\ (local hard drive): Do not rely upon this drive to save your documents, lab machines get reset and during this process all unnecessary data is erased.
- CD-RW drive: All lab computer as have CD burners available.
- USB flash drive: Shows as drive E or F depending on which Humphrey lab you are in.

Printing
- You can print from Windows laptops to Humphrey printers.
- Duplex printing is the default in all Humphrey computer labs. To print single-side, you will have to specify this to the printer. Visit http://www.hhh.umn.edu/compstaff/duplex.html. Keep in mind that the printer setting you last use will remain the same for you the next time you login on that particular computer.
Printing from a Laptop
For instructions on connecting to the printer server from a non-Humphrey computer, go to http://www.hhh.umn.edu/compstaff/printing.html. If you are on a Humphrey computer and need to install an additional printer, go to the Login to Print Server section. It will not ask for your username and password.
Reporting Lab, Computer, and Software Issues
You can create a new request through e-mail by sending an e-mail to compstaff@umn.edu for Service Desk requests and hhhweb@umn.edu for web-related requests. You will receive an automated reply with your request number.
- Do not type HELP in the Subject. Enter a descriptive Subject like “Computer H85-02 will not power on”.
- Include a detailed description of the problem in the body of the e-mail.
- Include the name/number of the computer in the message.
Humphrey School Listservs (E-mail Lists)
To view all Humphrey listservs, go to http://www.hhh.umn.edu/compstaff/email/listservs.html. You must be a member of the listserv to send an e-mail to the list. If you are not, the listserv moderator will receive your e-mail and will send it to the list if approved.

Wireless
Wireless connections are available in most locations in the Humphrey building and a good portion of campus. Once your laptop detects the wireless, open your browser. You will be prompted to authenticate with your Internet ID. This will allow you access to the UMN Wireless. Contact 1-HELP (612 301-4357) if you are having connection issues. NetFiles
NetFiles allows you to share files with people inside and outside the U of MN. You have 5GB of space in NetFiles. We recommend watching the orientation presentation at http://uttc.umn.edu/training/resources/netfiles/. More information about NetFiles, visit http://www1.umn.edu/netfiles/. You’ll need to activate your U of MN NetFiles account.
- Go to https://www.umn.edu/dirtools.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on 'NetFiles Account Options' and follow the instructions.

Software Available to Students
WebCT Vista
WebCT Vista is a course management software that enables instructors to create and manage Web-based learning materials and activities for their students. To see your list of WebCT Vista courses, go to http://www.myu.umn.edu/ and click on “my Course & Teaching”.
Moodle
Moodle is an open source course management system that enables instructors to create and manage Web-based learning materials and activities for their students. You can access your moodle courses through http://www.myu.umn.edu/ and click on “my Course & Teaching”. Also, you can access Moodle directly through http://moodle.umn.edu.
Blogs
UThink: Blogs at the U of MN Libraries is available to the faculty, staff, and students. All you need to login and start blogging is your U of M Internet ID and Password. To get started, go to http://blog.lib.umn.edu/
Wiki
Wikis are collaborative websites that can be edited using a Web browser. To get started, go to https://wiki.umn.edu/.
