The Minnesota Board of Regents has three members with strong ties to the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. The Joint Higher Education Committee on Regent Selection recommended Tuesday night that Linda Cohen, Peggy Lucas, and Abdul Omari be appointed to the Board. The legislature is expected to approve the selected Regents next week.
Cohen currently is the board chair, first appointed as Regent in 2007. She has previously served on the Humphrey School’s Advisory Council. Both Lucas and Omari are board newcomers. Lucas, the founding partner of Brighton Development Corporation, a housing redevelopment corporation, is a current member of the School’s Advisory Council. Omari is a third-year doctoral student studying international and comparative development education at the School. He was recommended to serve in the at-large position reserved for a University student.
The group had stiff competition: nine candidates were vying for four open positions, and the committee conducted four rounds of voting before reaching its decision. The full legislature approved the recommendations on Wednesday, March 6.
